Experience
I have a deep love of learning and a passion for helping others to discover the gifts and talents they have been given. I believe in encouraging and empowering students. I believe in meeting each student where he or she is in terms of knowledge and understanding, and advocating for and working with the student rather than judging him or her. I believe in helping students to recognize the resources they have within themselves and the resources they have around them which can help them meet their goals. I feel called to teaching and tutoring others particularly in the disciplines of writing and reading. The ability to read and write is pivotal to future success in life and in employment opportunities. My Experience: I have taught Composition 101 (Freshman Composition) and Composition and Literature 102 (Freshman Composition and Literature) at the college level. In these courses I focused on teaching the following skills: composition structure and content, finding supporting evidence, developing paragraphs, grammar, punctuation, reading comprehension, and critical thinking. I have also served as a teacher’s aide in Remedial English at the college level. I developed exercises designed to supplement the concepts they were learning in their Developmental English course. We focused on developing a cohesive structure to their essays, identifying their theses and the main points of their arguments, then finding supporting evidence which validates those arguments, organizing their paragraphs, and understanding the rules of grammar and punctuation. I also have three years of experience as a tutor for Northwest Missouri State University’s Writing Center. I have tutored over 100 students campus-wide who sought assistance with a variety of writing difficulties from their various disciplines. I am well-versed in both the MLA style and the APA style of documentation. I have also worked with numerous International students in an English as a Second Language program. In this program, we focused on conversation, reading comprehension, writing skills, punctuation, and grammar. As a graduate student in English, I won the Best Student Paper award in 1991 and I was nominated for the Best Student Paper award in 1992. I was also inducted in the Sigma Tau Delta English Honor Society, and I delivered papers at two national conferences. I have also had several short stories and articles published.
